The Blue Devil Damselfish is marked for its beauty and purity and is perhaps one of the most popular of damsefishes. The Blue Devil shown above is probably a young male or a female.

The Blue Devil Damselfish also known as Chrysiptera cyanae is a blue coloured small marine fish having a orange color tail. The Blue Devil Damsel species is known to have several color morphs; some have an orange tail, some possess a yellow one, and some with a yellow chest, too. The Blue Devil Damselfish females are entirely blue without any yellow or orange coloration, but some females from certain localities have a black ocellus on lower posterior part of the dorsal fin. Also they have nearly translucent fins, versus totally blue fins in males. It means that the Blue Devil Damsel species has a sexual difference. Juveniles are also entirely blue with translucent fins that are similar to females. When they get a size of males they will acquire a yellow-orange coloration in body and fins.

The Blue Devil Damselfish available in a pet store may often be a juvenile that has not yet come into its adult coloration. As they mature you should see the males developing their yellow-orange tail colors and the females gain a black spot at the base of the hindmost dorsal ray. The adult Blue Devils can grow upto 6 cm or 2.4 inches.

The Blue Devil Damselfish can be kept in groups if you are careful to have a good male to female ratio. In the wild, there will be several females to one male. The Blue Devil Damselfish is among the easiest of all marine fish to keep.

Habitat: The Blue Devil Damsels are found throughout the Indo-Pacific region; on the northern portion of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia to Solomon and Mariana Islands, north to Ryukyu. These fishes are found in depth range of .03-10 mm.

Minimum Tank Size: These fishes require a minimum tank size of 10 gallon if this is the only fish to be kept in.Like all damselfish, the Blue Devil Damsels can be territorial and aggressive, especially as they get older. These can be kept in groups if you are careful about the sex ratio, one male to several females. Can be kept with other larger fish but watch them closely to be sure their aggression doesn't become destructive.

Feeding and Diet: The Blue Devil Damselfish will readily eat all kinds of live, frozen, and flake foods and algae. Finely chopped meaty foods (like brine shrimp) can be fed regularly. It is best to feed small amounts several times a day. In a reef situation they don't really need to be fed very often at all.
