The Chalk Basslet is a very pretty fish that is colored in a light purple with bright blue to orange saddle bands along its back. These fish are very peaceful and do well in the home aquarium. Their usual behavior is to float in place or hover near the bottom -- like a Cardinalfish. They are great for reef tanks and will accept most fish foods. They can be kept in small groups. The family of Seabasses are closely related to the Groupers. These Basslets are often found along the bottom or in dark caves.The Chalk Basslet is a very sturdy aquarium fish. Although not aggressive, they will defend their favorite hole or interstice, chasing fish away that venture to near. Best kept with peaceful tankmates. If you want to keep more than one, add them simultaneously to a larger tank with plenty of hiding places. An ideal fish for the reef aquarium, this durable fish typically does great in any well maintained aquarium. Can be kept in groups in larger (100 gal.) aquariums.

Chalk Basslet,Serranus tortugarum, is an outstanding reef fish that is great for aquarists of all experience levels. This Western Atlantic native lives in waters ranging from Southern Florida to the reefs of the Caribbean. As a carnivore, it readily accepts meaty meals including Brine Shrimp and frozen prepared foods. Will hide in cliffs and overhangs of the rock structure, upside down, so do not become alarmed if it swims this way.

Maximum Size: The Chalk Basslet grows up to 3 inches.

Minimum Tank Size Suggested: The Chalk Basslet prefers a tank of at least 20 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim.

Water Conditions: Keep water quality high (SG 1.020 - 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4, Temp. 72 - 78° F).

Feeding and Diet: As a carnivore, the Chalk Basslet will do well on a diet of meaty fare including marine fish, crustacean flesh, mysid shrimp, and quality frozen preparations.
