Aquarium Tips for Hot Weather

A small little amazing world in the aquarium at your home needs extra attention during summers. The water temperature of your tank may rise, causing discomfort to your aquatic pets because hot water contains less Oxygen as compared to cold water. And as we all know, low Oxygen levels can cause difficult breathing and can risk the lives inside the aquarium. In addition, raised temperature increases the metabolism of the fish, due to which they require more Oxygen for survival. It is therefore important that you make the required arrangement to help your aquarium cope with hot weather. This article entails aquarium tips for hot weather that will help balance your aquarium.

Lights. Lights fitted in your tank, emit heat, and warm up the aquarium water. Keep the lights of your tank off during the day.

Overstocking. Do not overcrowd your aquarium. Keep it moderately stocked so that each of its inmates gets a sufficient amount of Oxygen.

Aquarium Cover.Place the Aquarium Cover in a way to allow easy evaporation, while ensuring that no fish jumps out. A vented position serves the best. Also, keep the cover made of porous material such as the one used in Egg Crates, instead of solid glass, metal, etc.

Aeration. Increase the aquarium aeration by directing the Pump Outlets towards the water surface. This evenly circulates air throughout the aquarium, resulting in the well-being of your aquatic pets.

Aquarium Filtration. Make sure that your Aquarium Filters, Mechanical, Chemical, and Biological, are working fine. Waste build up in a tank during hot weather can be toxic for the life within it.

Aquatic Plants. Keeping aquatic plants in your aquarium also helps to increase the volume of soluble Oxygen in the tank.

Algae Scrappers. Keep the aquarium tidy by scrapping the undesirable Algae off its walls. If the water in the aquarium is not changed regularly, it can cause unwanted Algal growth. To strike an ideal balance in Algal growth, introduce Algae Feeders in aquarium.

Dechlorination. Dechlorinate the aquarium water in hot summers whenever required.

Debris. Continuously remove the uneaten food after every feed, as the Bacterial action on the Detritus can reduce the amount of Oxygen from Water. A lot of waste production adds to the Oxygen deficiency.

Cold Additions. If your fish turns pale or seems breathless, especially due to hot weather, then you can add a small quantity of cold water and ice in the aquarium for quick relief. Make sure the addition should not be in a large quantity because the fish may not be able to tolerate sudden temperature change and may get stressed.

Aquarium Chiller. If you have a large tank, you need an Aquarium Chiller or a Cooler to keep it cool so that the aquarium inmates are not distraught by the heat.

Aquarium Feeding. Make sure that the Aquarium Food you use to feed your fish contains all the easily assimilable essential nutrients. Feed your fish twice or thrice a day in small amount that too during cool durations such as morning.

Fish Illness. Keep a watch on the breathing rates of fish. Abnormal rate indicates problem in fish. Any discolorations of Fins, missing Scales, aggressiveness, or laziness in fish, all are the signs of illness and stress.

Aquarium Maintenance. Undoubtedly, the most important aspect about an aquarium is its maintenance. Remove dead leaves regularly, change Spectrum Lights per 6-12 months, and change water on time, as regular aquarium maintenance.

Aquarium Water. Use only the specialized Aquarium Cleaners to clean the aquarium water. Do not employ household cleaners, pesticides, or insecticides as the Fish Gills are sensitive to chemicals and can even die of choking.
