Wet & Dry Filter
Wet & Dry Filters, also known as Trickle Filters, are a type of Aquarium Filter that executes Biological Filtration for both, Marine as well as Freshwater Aquariums. Therefore, Wet & Dry Filters perform the triplet task of Oxygenation, Ammonia conversion, and Gaseous Exchange.
Based on installation, there are two types of Wet & Dry Filters. The ones that are mounted on the top of an aquarium and the others, the commonest ones, are installed below a tank. Water is introduced in these Wet & Dry Filters, which is then prefiltered by foam, wool, or any strainer placed on perforated Drip Plates. This prefiltered water then passes from the Drip Plate to the actual site of filtration, Filter Media, which usually are Bio Balls. CO2 is released and Oxygen is extracted, as there is contact between wastewater and Filter Media. Simultaneously, the beneficial Bacteria convert the toxic waste into harmless materials. Now, the water is released into the Sump, which in turn is equipped with filters.
Fresh Marine brings some interesting Wet & Dry Filter options from none other than CPR Aquatic. Let us take a look.Overflow Box.
An Overflow Box is usually integral to a Sump Filter. The Overflow Box is placed in the tank and if the water released by Wet & Dry Filters into the aquarium, is beyond the manageable level, the balance water flows to the Overflow Box. This water in the Overflow Box is then reverted to the Sump. Therefore, an Overflow Box helps keep the aquarium water level consistent.
CPR CS Series Overflow Boxes by CPR Aquatic. Meant for Glass or Acrylic Aquariums, these Overflow Boxes, help you alter your aquarium’s water level. The Black Top of these Overflow Boxes checks undesirable Algal growth, while the Plastic Screen omits any risk of Fish loss. Bioballs are the Filter Media for Biological Filters and Gas Exchange Reactors, which are actually the base on which the Bacterial colonies thrive.
Rainbow Lifegard by Pentair Aquatics. These Bio-Mate Bioballs provide optimal surface area for the Nitrifying Bacterial growth and the healthy aeration thereof, in an aquarium. These Bioballs are made of inert, non-leaching, and non-toxic material, suitable for both, Marine as well as Freshwater Aquariums. Rainbow Lifegard comes in 1” and 1.50” sizes with one Bioball being required per Gallon of water.
BIO-BALE Biological Filter Medium by CPR Aquatic. This Bioball is made of FDA approved, non-toxic, inert Plastic material and has a unique surface texture with large pores and strong capillary action for high water adhesion. This humidity results in fast Bacterial Growth, even with the high flow of water. Its ergonomic design of a long strip enables large surface area with 250 Square Feet of surface area Per Cubic Foot, and 33 Square Feet per Gallon, for the filtration process to take place. These very cost-effective Bioballs come in 1 Cubic Feet long and 1-Gallon packs.Mechanical Filter Media.
They help filter out large waste particles present in aquarium water.
