Taxonomy: Nassarius Snail belongs to the Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Mollusca, Class Gastropoda, Family Nassariidae and Genus Nassarius.

Scientific names: The scientific name of Nassarius Snail is Nassarius species.

Origin or natural range: The Nassarius species originates from the Caribbean Sea, the Western Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern Pacific Ocean including Baja California.

Size: Nassarius Snail may grow up to a size of 0.50 inches.

Morphology:
  • The Nassarius species has an oval shaped shell which is spiraled in design.
  • The shape of the siphon of Nassarius Snail resembles to that of a tube or a trunk. The siphon extends out from the base of shell to search for food.
  • The mantle of the Nassarius species continuously secretes shell to increase its size in order to keep up with the body growth. The shell provides protection to the snail’s soft body from its predators.
  • The pedal flap of Nassarius Snail comes out from the base of shell and helps move the animal along with its exoskeleton.
  • The shell of the Nassarius species has an opening in which the animal withdraws itself completely when disturbed. The opening has a covering called operculum which shuts as soon as the snail goes inside the shell.

  • Temperature of water: Seventy-two to seventy-eight degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Specific gravity of water: 1.023 to 1.025.
  • pH of water: 8.10 to 8.40.
  • Acclimation: Slowly acclimate Nassarius Snail to your marine aquarium environment using the Slow Drip Method. The slow acclimation process of the Nassarius species requires a time period of minimum two hours.
  • Aquarium activity:
  • Nassarius Snail is generally found relaxing in its sand burrow with only its siphons being visible.
  • The Nassarius species has sharp olfactory sense and can smell food and act upon it as soon as its meal is available in the aquarium.
  • Nassarius Snail does not disturb corals and therefore, you can safely keep the snail with corals.
  • If turned upside down, the Nassarius species can turn itself downside down without needing any external assistance.
