A common name that’s assigned to the family Pseudochromidae, the Dotty backs span over a total of four sub-families, sixteen genera and more than a hundred species. What the hobbyists mostly deal with are from the genus Pseudochromis; a genus representing the most colorful ones from the family. The Royal Dotty back fish is no exception; the species bear some common resemblance with the others within the family and we shall be facing the accounts in the following paragraphs.

Also known as the Bi-color Pseudochromis, the Royal dotty back fish is a fish with vivid colors; while the back half of the Royal dotty back fish is a combination of orange and yellow, the front portion is dominated by violet. Like the rest of the family, the Royal Dotty back fish are also hermaphrodites and can adopt either male or female characteristics (in this case, the reproductive organs). The male Royal dotty back fish performs his mating dance outside his cave to excite the female, which then enters the male's cave. Depending on species, the female Royal dottyback fish can lay up to a thousand eggs, which are then fertilized by the male. The male Royal dottyback fish then guards the egg sack till the transparent fry hatch. Otherwise a hardy and low maintenance fish, the Royal Dotty back fish is a semi-aggressive variety that’s not easily intimidated by other fishes and will stake out and defend a small territory, particularly against the ones with colorations. This makes the Royal Dotty back fish an unsuitable member for a peaceful tank community. However, the Royal Dotty back fish don't harm inverts, but may pick at sessile organisms like tubeworms.

Maximum Size: The Royal Dotty back fish can attain a maximum size of 3 inches.

General Size: Most specimens of the Royal Dotty back fish grow from an inch to 2 inches.

Minimum Tank Size Suggested: A 10-gallon capacity tank would make a fine abode for the Royal Dotty back fish.

Tank Conditions: The Royal Dotty back fish demands a home aquarium with plenty of hiding places and the pH level should not vary beyond 8.1 and 8.4, whereas the temperature level should stay between 72 and 78° F. The specific gravity of the water should be between 1.02 and 1.025, while Carbonate Hardness (dKH) should be around 8 - 12°.

Habitat: A loner by habit, the Royal Dotty Back fish is found in and around the rocky regions of coral reefs in the Red Sea and adjoining regions.

Feeding and Diet: Small crustaceans and zooplankton fits the bill of the Royal Dotty back fish as its ideal diet; frozen foods such as mysids, Brine shrimp, krill, and plankton also fits the bill.
