Color: The Baseodiscus species occurs in tan, yellow and brown colors.

Compatibility: Tiger Tail Cucumber is non-aggressive towards the other marine aquarium invertebrates.

Habit & Habitat: The Baseodiscus species is nocturnal in habit and therefore, looks for food at night.

Growth enabling environment in your marine aquarium: Your marine aquarium must meet the following environmental specifications to successfully host Tiger Tail Cucumber:

  • Temperature of water: The temperature of your reef tank should range within seventy-two to seventy-eight degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Specific gravity of water: The specific gravity of water having Tiger Tail Cucumber in it should be maintained between 1.023 and 1.025.
  • pH of water: The pH value of water should scale within 8.10 to 8.40.
  • Illumination: Tiger Tail Cucumber requires light in the marine aquarium it inhabits.
Habit & habitat:
  • To host the Baseodiscus species, you should have a marine aquarium. As Tiger Tail Cucumber is reef compatible, you can keep it in a reef type marine aquarium with a minimum capacity of fifty gallons of water for one cucumber.
  • The bottom of your marine aquarium should have a thick layer of sand and should have rock with crevices or rocky caves for Tiger Tail Cucumber to hide in during the day or if disturbed.
  • Keep non-aggressive members with the Baseodiscus species in your marine aquarium to avoid any attack on the cucumber, thereby preventing any poisonous secretions.
Feeding & Nutrition:
  • Tiger Tail Cucumber is Omnivorous and Detrivorous in feeding habit as it eats detritus and algae present on the sand of your marine aquarium.
  • Owing to its nocturnal habit, the Baseodiscus species feeds at night.
  • Tiger Tail Cucumber is not able to externally sort the food material on the sand. Therefore, it eats sand. The organic substance present in the eaten sand is digested by the cucumber’s body while expelling out clean sand in the form of pellets.
Benefits:
  • The Baseodiscus species eats detritus and algae, thereby cleaning the sand off any organic matter which would have otherwise decayed and would have contaminated your aquarium’s water.
  • Tiger Tail Cucumber searches for food in the sand and therefore ploughs it well which improves the aeration in sand.
Care:
  • Tiger Tail Cucumber is very difficult to maintain.
  • The increased levels of Nitrates and Copper in your marine aquarium may be detrimental for the health of the Baseodiscus species.
  • Tiger Tail Cucumber is sensitive to the changes in the water quality.
Caution:
  • The Baseodiscus species is poisonous in nature and therefore, it should be handled and maintained by the expert aquarists only.
  • If threatened, Tiger Tail Cucumber expels its internal organs which are lethally poisonous for any fish in your marine aquarium. Therefore, do not keep fish and the Baseodiscus species in the same reef tank.
  • Tiger Tail Cucumber secretes poisonous membranes if it is disturbed or if it dies. In case the cucumber dies in your marine aquarium, change your aquarium’s water several times and place some carbon tied in a net near your aquarium filter to completely free your tank of any toxins.
