Shifting House with Marine Aquarium

Shifting house is undoubtedly a tedious task, be it a human house or those of pets. Transferring a marine aquarium is an ordeal in its own right. Exotic marine aquarium animals are generally sensitive and shifting may prove stressful for them. It is important that you arrange for transition before actually transporting them. Here are a few pointers on how you can proceed with shifting your marine aquarium.

Placing the Aquarium in your New Home

  • Sunlight: While selecting an area for the aquarium, keep in mind that the location receives moderate sunlight.
  • Temperature: If the temperature at the location is high, it may result in the excessive growth of algae in the tank, thereby contaminating its water and creating an unhealthy environment for its inmates.
  • Visibility: Position your marine aquarium at a place offering a full view of the aquarium.

  • Handling the Movement

  • Fish Bags: Contact your local aquatic retailer to provide you with the right fish bags and polystyrene boxes for a smooth transportation. Fill the fish bags with around 25% water and try to seal in as much air, leaving a good supply of oxygen for the fish. You can then put these bags into polyboxes to maintain the water temperature. The inmates should be comfortable in these bags for about 12 hrs.

  • Packing the Aquarium: Before you pack the aquarium:
  • Remove all the ornaments & gravel.
  • Live rock can be stored just like the fish.
  • The filter needs to be stored in water else, the live bacteria in it may die.
  • Try retaining as much mature water from the aquarium as possible. Use water from the surface, as near the gravel area it may be dirty. You can store this in water barrels or RO containers.

  • In the New House
  • Shifting Aquarium: Either move the aquarium first into your new home, prior to the rest of your stuff, or move it at the end, after you finish shifting the whole house.
  • Tank preparation: Be sure to prepare the tank well in advance before bringing in the fish. You may ensure the following:
  • refill with water retained earlier
  • restore the ornaments, gravel, and filter
  • Install a heater, if required, to create a comfortable temperature for the fish

  • Light Adjustment: It is important to acclimatise the fishes to the new environment. After removing them from the boxes, introduce them to the light slowly. Once they have adjusted to the light, which may take around 15 minutes, you can move them into the freshly installed aquarium.
